Despite having the home crowd to their advantage, there is little optimism amongst the Austrians in what will be their first ever appearance at the European Championships. They are a lowly placed 88th in the FIFA world rankings and total outsiders to win the competition at a staggering 100-1. As automatic qualifiers, their preparation amounts to friendlies. After defeating the Ivory Coast 3-2, there were signs of improvement. However, this was followed by defeats to England and Germany, in addition to a 4-3 loss to the Netherlands after racing into a three goal lead. Though they have few recognised individual stars, their 24 year-old captain Andreas Ivanschitz has been dubbed ‘the Austrian Beckham’. Hickersberger is intent on developing the young talent of Austria, yet for some this tournament may be deemed a little too soon. Expect Austria to focus on defence and deploy a solid back four. In a side renowned for lack of strike prowess, this looks likely to be a 4-5-1. Contrastingly, Croatia will look to do adopt an attacking approach with an unorthodox 4-1-3-2. This should be supported by a good defence, though perhaps lacking pace. Surely the major problem for Croatia is the absence of their injured striker Eduardo da Silva, whose goals in qualifying almost single-handedly saw them through. The hosts will be determined to start well in front of their own fans and undoubtedly put up a physical performance, though the creativity of the likes of Luka Modric could prove too hot to handle.
