The PR mind games have commenced ahead of the Euro 2008 Semi Final clash between Spain and Russia with commentators across Europe split on the way this tie will go!The PR mind games have commenced ahead of the Euro 2008 Semi Final clash between Spain and Russia with commentators across Europe split on the way this tie will go, despite Spain’s 4 – 1 victory over the Russians only two weeks ago! Russia’ Coach Gus Hiddink is quoted as being ‘surprised’ at the progress his squad have made in terms of competing in a high profile competition such as Euro 08. He further hinted that he may have preferred to face the Italians in the Semi’s as tactically he felt more confident in predicting the way they would play and thus be able to plan a game strategy to overcome this. He is reported as saying that the Spanish side are similar to his Russian team, that they like to play attractive football, but if they go a goal up they will look to defend more and play on the counter attack. He urged his team to relax and enjoy this moment in the tournament, suggesting that Spain are the favourites to win the game and therefore the pressure on his squad should not be that high. Despite Spain outclassing the Russian’s in their opening Group D game, just over two weeks ago, Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas is quoted as being wary of the Russians challenge and urged his team mates and supporters not to expect a repeat result. He is further quoted as saying that Spain need to keep their feet on the ground if they are going to have any chance of winning the tournament. Spain are now the only undefeated team remaining in the competition but struggled to find a way past the Italian defence in their Quarter Final and had to rely on penalties to progress to the Semi’s. Russia have improved with every performance in the competition so far and their demolition of the Netherlands has made everyone sit up and notice! On paper this is the closest matched and most attractive looking of the Semi Finals making predictions for the outcome very difficult. George Parker Fancy writing for LiveFootball?
