On the eve of Euro 08 is it time for Ronaldo to get real and resist Real? Ray Race considers the distractions to Portugal and Manchester United Is it time for Cristiano Ronaldo to get 'Real'? The media coverage and widespread speculation regarding Ronaldo's Manchester United future and whether Real Madrid have the money and influence to prise him away from Old Trafford has dominated the headlines during the past week posing the following questions: How will this have impacted upon Portugal's final preparations for Euro 08? How will this be affecting the player? Portugal coach Scolari has made the unusual move in offering Sir Alex to visit Ronaldo at the Portuguese Training camp to sort matters out, it's unclear if he will accept this invitation. Ronaldo and his international coach announced the day before their first Euro 08 Group A game against Turkey that neither would now be talking about their respective futures until after Euro 08 which no doubt will increase the speculative media coverage. In the meantime Manchester United fans appear divided about what should happen, some hard liners favouring the option to stick him in the reserves for the season unless he commits to the club, an option apparently that the Glazers will back if Sir Alex takes this route. Others appear disappointed by his attitude and feel that if the price is right it is time to 'get rid'. Some still however hope he'll be more honourable to the club and the contract currently he's tied to and continue his road to become a true United legend. David Beckham was quoted in the press advising Ronaldo to stay put for another couple of seasons but it appears that a move may ultimately be inevitable as the player has yet to state a clear commitment to staying at Old Trafford beyond the start of the new season. Whoever is advising Ronaldo about his approach to dealing with the media is either negligent or has a direct agenda of getting the player transferred. Wisdom is not usually attributed to the young and in the interests of Ronaldo I hope he does not follow a similar career path of a certain Mr. Anelka who after seemingly having a great career at his feet whilst a young double winner at Arsenal, decided to jump ship too early for glory elsewhere and end up being a journey man, admiringly to large European clubs, but missing the chance to be remembered as a great player (just watch him win the Euro 08 tournament for France now!) They are also negligent in recognising the task ahead - Euro 08 - this player needs to perform for his homeland. If he doesn't the Portuguese FA should join United in hunting down the villains influencing this conflict of interests for a player under contract for another 4 years. So is it time for Ronaldo to get real and resist Real for at least a couple of years? Recommendation - stay at Old Trafford, become a legend and then do a Beckham.
