Jon Walters 14th minute goal earned Ipswich the three points at Pride Park. Paul Bloomfield reports.Ipswich took the lead when Jon Walters got the faintest of touches on Ben Thatcher’s cross, with the ball going in off the post. Walters ghosted between two Derby defenders before diverting the ball past goalkeeper Stephen Bywater, who had a spell on-loan with the Blues last season. A heroic block from Moritz Volz denied Derby from levelling things up when Ben Thatcher’s attempted clearance fell straight to a white shirt. In the second half, Ivan Campo got lucky when his header fell straight into the path of the onrushing Steve Davies who struck his shot against the post from the edge of the 18-yard box. Jordan Stewart was dismissed for Derby 13 minutes from time when he went in high on David Norris. Stewart had already been booked but the referee produced a straight red card following the incident. It was an uninspiring display from the home side which ultimately resulted in Paul Jewell handing in his resignation as Derby boss. Town were not overly impressive but were resolute and ensured that an indifferent 2008 for Ipswich ended with a victory.
