Ipswich were left to rue missed opportunities as goalless draw was played out at Portman Road. Paul Bloomfield reports.

Ipswich came very close to taking the lead in some style when Jon Stead saw his firmly struck right-footed shot from outside the area strike Romain Larrieu’s left-hand post after 28 minutes.

In the second half, Rory Fallon hooked a shot onto the crossbar with Simon Walton following up only to head straight into the arms of Richard Wright. It was a great chance for the player who spent a brief spell with Town on-loan in the 2006/2007 season.

Having come on as a 64th minute substitute, the small figure of Kevin Lisbie managed to get his head to Jon Walters’ cross but directed his header straight at Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu.

You got the feeling at half time that it may be one of those days, and as Danny Haynes scuffed a shot wide late on, it became apparent that it simply wasn’t Town’s day.

The away side will have been delighted to come away with a point, especially after their spell of three straight league defeats prior to the game.

Town are showing undoubted improvement of late but this game underlined the need to take your chances, as if you don’t, even if you play well, you don’t rack up those all important points.
