Wigan emerged 4-1 victors in a Carling Cup tie in which the final scoreline didn’t tell the whole story of the match. Paul Bloomfield reports.

Ipswich squandered a whole host of opportunities in the first half, and would later be left to rue them. The Premier League outfit displayed a cutting edge in their finishing; something that was lacking from the home side.

Tommy Miller came close for Town on two occasions in the first-half, with Jon Walters guilty of missing Town’s best chance of the half when he scooped the ball high over the bar from a very promising position. Ipswich were more than a match for Wigan in the first 45 minutes and should have been in the lead.

Despite this fact, Town could have found themselves behind at the break had Richard Wright not managed to tip Amr Zaki’s free-kick onto the crossbar on the stroke of half-time.

However, Town did not manage to survive the next free kick in the second-half from a similarly threatening position. Richard Wright managed to keep out Wilson Palacios’ initial effort, but Lee Cattermole was on hand to capitalise on the rebound. It is unclear which part of Cattermole’s body the ball went into the net off, but Wigan found themselves in front nevertheless.

Jon Walters was the man who drew Ipswich deservedly level when he netted with a side-footed volley from Alan Quinn’s cross, having been teed up by Tommy Miller.

Ipswich’s parity with the Premier League side didn’t last long, as Olivier Kapo found the ball at his feet and duly blasted the ball home past a helpless Richard Wright.

Paul Scharner made in 3-1 on the 70 minute mark, nudging home from close range after Antonio Valencia’s corner had been headed on towards goal by Amr Zaki.

Wigan notched their fourth and final goal of the night deep into stoppage time, when Titus Bramble claimed an assist on his return to Portman Road, with his goal bound effort being helped on into the net by substitute Henri Camara.

The final score of 4-1 flattered the Premier League side, and underlined the importance of taking your chances when up against such clinical opposition.

Jon Walters has been linked with a move to Wigan in recent times and will no doubt have impressed Steve Bruce further with another fine display.
