Goals from Pablo Couñago and Jon Walters guided Ipswich to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Derby. Paul Bloomfield reports.Darren Ambrose had an opportunity early-on to mark his first game back at Portman Road in a blue shirt with a goal, but headed straight at Roy Carroll in the Derby County goal. David Norris almost capitalised on Jordan Stewart’s failure to get sufficient power on a header back to his goalkeeper, but Carroll managed to beat Norris to the ball. Norris called Carroll into action again when he was put set-up by Jon Walters but struck his shot straight at Carroll who was able to deal with the situation quite comfortably. Claude Davis’ failure to deal with an aerial ball presented Ipswich with their first goal of the afternoon. Pablo Couñago took full advantage of Davis’ error as he ran through on goal before coolly rolling the ball past Roy Carroll and into the corner of the net. It was yet another defensive mishap by Derby which resulted in Town’s second goal. David Wright played a low ball into the box from the right side which was met by Darren Powell only for him to slice his clearance into the path of Jon Walters, who was left with the simple task turning and blasting home from close-range. Substitute Kevin Lisbie came close to widening the winning margin in the final seconds when he ran at the Derby defence before forcing Roy Carroll into a neat save with his feet. It was a comfortable and deserving victory for the Blues, but the visitors didn’t prove to be much opposition, with Derby manager Paul Jewell understandably unhappy with their performance. Town’s two goalscorers were two men that were long overdue a goal. Pablo Couñago netted his first goal since his brace in the 2-2 draw with Swansea at Portman Road in October, with Walters ending his drought having last found the net against Wigan in the Carling Cup back in September.
