Two goals from super-sub Jon Stead gave Ipswich a 2-0 victory over QPR at Portman Road. Paul Bloomfield reports.

Lee Cook came close to giving his Queens Park Rangers side the lead when he dispatched a free kick onto the crossbar.

The Hoops threatened again just moments later, with Richard Wright producing a stunning save to prevent Martin Rowlands from scoring with a close-range header.

Stead gave Town the lead on 71 minutes after fellow substitute Pablo Couñago flicked the ball up into the air for him to latch onto only to see his shot saved, before nodding in the rebound.

The second goal came in a way that Town haven’t managed to fashion a goal from in quite some time; a corner kick. Owen Garvan delivered the ball into the box for Stead to powerfully head high into the middle of the goal past QPR goalkeeper Radek Cerny.

The signing from Sheffield United almost bagged a hat-trick in stoppage time, but saw his free kick strike the post, with Pablo Couñago failing to convert the follow-up.

The 2-0 win is a good result for the Blues, and was a deserved victory. Amongst the plus points for Town other than the 3 points themselves, are the fact that Town kept a clean sheet and Jon Stead’s continued impressive scoring record at Portman Road since he has joined the club.
