Town ended their run of five home league games without a win with a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest at Portman Road. Paul Bloomfield reports.Ipswich took a 14th minute lead when James Perch headed into his own net from Tommy Miller’s delivery into the box from a free-kick. A minute into the second half, Richard Wright made the first of many good saves on the night when he got down well to divert Matt Thornhill’s effort that was destined for the bottom corner of the net. Gareth McAuley was the provider for Town’s second goal of the night on the hour-mark, when the defender found himself in an unusually advanced position. McAuley fed David Wright down the right hand side with a perfectly executed through ball and Wright fired past Paul Smith at his near post. Richard Wright made a save of the highest quality in the 67th minute after Alan Quinn’s poor attempted clearance fell to the feet of Lewis McGugan who unleashed a vicious effort that was turned over magnificently by Wright. The visitors pulled a goal back in the 76th minute when Nottingham Forest substitute Garath McCleary put in a low ball from the left hand side for Nathan Tyson to have a strike on goal. Gareth McAuley managed to get himself in the way of the Tyson’s first effort, but the Forest striker blasted the ball past Richard Wright at the second attempt to give the away side hope of coming away with a point. Forest came within a whisker of getting that point just three minutes from the end, when Lewis McGugan ran through and struck Richard Wright’s near post. Yet more heroric defending from Gareth McAuley ensured that Nathan Tyson didn’t gobble up the rebound. Despite seemingly taking the foot of the gas after going 2-0 up, Town probably just about deserved the three points based on their first half showing; although Forest could have so easily came away with a point if it wasn’t for Richard Wright and some good fortune.
