Goals from Jon Walters, Pablo Counago and Jon Stead set up Ipswich with a 4th Round tie at either Roots Hall or Stamford Bridge. Paul Bloomfield reports.

It wasn’t until Wednesday that Ipswich’s opponents were officially known, given the bizarre events that occurred between Chesterfield and Droylsden over the past few weeks.

Town’s opening goal came from the penalty spot 5 minutes into the second half when Chesterfield’s Phil Picken was penalised for handball inside the box. Jon Walters stepped up to fire the ball high into the middle of Tommy Lee’s net and give Ipswich the lead.

Pablo Counago added a second soon after with a casual finish from 4 yards. Haynes crossed from the right-hand side before Alan Quinn nodded the ball into Counago’s path for the Spaniard to slot past Tommy Lee.

Jon Stead completed the scoring with a neatly executed volley from 10 yards. Jon Walters flicked on Ben Thatcher’s long ball forward for Stead to fire home and secure the Blues’ place in the next round of the competition.

Ipswich advance to the fourth round where they will face an away trip to either Southend or Premier League giants, Chelsea.
