Match Report: Nottm Forest 1-1 Ipswich

Ipswich made it two successive draws against newly promoted clubs with a 1-1 draw against bottom of the table Forest. Paul Bloomfield reports.

Forest momentarily thought they had taken the lead after 4 minutes but Garath McCleary’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Town fans may have briefly had their hopes raised too on 19 minutes when Jon Walters unleashed a stunning effort from long range that came back off the crossbar.

Forest were able to celebrate without restraint on 33 minutes, when Garath McCleary netted with a great strike. There was no doubt in the legitimacy of his goal on this occasion, with the winger’s sweetly-struck shot from outside the box whizzing past Town goalkeeper Richard Wright. However, there were some question marks in the build-up to the goal from a Town perspective. Jon Walters was given the ball on a couple of occasions when he was clearly suffering from a knock. Having conceded possession, Forest won a corner kick from which the home side took the lead.

Forest led 1-0 at half-time, and were on course for what would only be their second league victory of the season.

Ipswich were awarded a penalty 7 minutes into the second-half when Alan Quinn was felled just inside the box. Up stepped Tommy Miller to maintain his impeccable record from the spot and draw Ipswich level.

A 1-1 draw was how it finished, and was a result that did little to please either sets of supporters. It was an unremarkable game with little in the way of chances or talking points. The home fans voiced their disapproval at full-time; a feeling matched by Town supporters who expected much better against a side who have managed only one win on their return to the second tier of English football. Ipswich did little to threaten Forest, and indeed perhaps a 4-5-1 formation against a side bereft of confidence wasn’t the best way to line up. The Ipswich hierarchy may have the backing of Jim Magilton, but many fans do not; something that is only going to intensify if draws don’t turn into wins.
