Ipswich recorded a long-awaited win with a 3-1 triumph over Plymouth Argyle, in a game that saw David Norris red carded against his former club. Paul Bloomfield reports.

Jon Walters came close to giving Ipswich the lead less than two minutes into the game when his angled shot come back off the post before Plymouth were able to clear the ball to safety.

Plymouth came close to scoring themselves after 10 minutes when Rory Fallon ran into the box and set up Paul Gallagher who really should have put the Pilgrims in front, but Richard Wright was able to make a fairly comfortable save.

The home side had another golden opportunity when Rory Fallon failed to direct his header into the net from a dangerous set-piece delivery into the Town box.

The deadlock was broken just before the half-hour mark, when Owen Garvan gave Ipswich the lead. The Irish midfielder unleashed a firmly struck effort from just inside the Plymouth penalty box, capitalising on the home side’s inability to clear the ball to safety.

Plymouth’s on-loan Paul Gallagher called Richard Wright into action once again soon after when the home side were awarded a free kick on the very edge of the box. Gallagher stepped up to take the free kick and drilled it low but Wright was equal to it, going down to his left-hand post.

Both Town’s and Garvan’s second goal of the game came after good work by Jon Walters, making a nuisance of himself in the Plymouth box. Kevin Lisbie then laid the ball off to Garvan who then drilled a low shot into the far corner of the net from just outside the box. The midfielder’s two goals doubled his tally for the season, with both efforts executed with his weaker right foot.

The Blues went in at half-time with a two-goal lead and were well on their way to recording a second away win of the season.

David Norris, returning to Home Park for the first time since his move to the Blues, very nearly got himself on the score sheet early in the second-half but his effort was kept out by Romain Larrieu. However, Kevin Lisbie was on hand to put in the rebound from close-range.

Any chance of a rare clean sheet for Town evaporated when Craig Cathcart netted with a diving header from a set-piece delivery.

David Norris was dismissed late-on for kicking the ball away with just seconds remaining. Referee Pat Miller seemed determined to send someone off during the course of the afternoon, having produced nine yellow cards in addition to the red for the minimalist of offences or seemingly non-existent ones. Both sets of fans could agree that it was one of the worse refereeing displays they have ever witnessed. An example Milller’s card-happy nature was booking Owen Garvan for taking a free-kick too soon for his liking. Plymouth fans will be particularly aggrieved at his decision to penalise Gareth McAuley for an offence that was inside the penalty area, but awarded outside of the box.

The three points away from home for Town was very welcome having gone three games without one. The Blues must now look to start recording back-to-back victories if they are to climb the table and mount a serious promotion bid.
