Ipswich fell to defeat at Deepdale despite a good showing, with glaring defensive errors proving costly. Paul Bloomfield reports.

The hosts took the lead from the penalty spot after Alex Bruce was penalised for bringing down Stephen Elliott, with Callum Davidson converting the spot-kick.

The man who always seems to score against Preston, Tommy Miller, did so again when he slotted home from Luciano Civelli's through-ball.

However, Preston went back in front when Jon Parkin capitalised on a terrible mix-up at the back. Alex Bruce hesitated to deal with a high ball over the top, waiting for Richard Wright to come out and claim it. When Wright did come to meet the ball, he failed to meet it and Parkin nodded the ball over his head before rolling the ball into an empty net.

The 60th minute saw Preston extend their lead to 3-1, with an unmarked Stephen Elliott netting at the far post from a corner kick. It was further poor defensive play and despite having the better of the game, Town found themselves two goals down with a mountain to climb.

However, it was a good response by Town, who scored four minutes later through Tommy Miller’s superb 20-yard free-kick. It was Miller’s second goal of the game against the club he had a brief spell on loan with whilst he was at Sunderland.

Kevin Lisbie hit the post in the 72nd minute, as Town pushed for an equaliser. Despite Town’s best efforts, an equaliser wasn’t forthcoming and the three points went to Preston to boost their play-off ambitions.

It was a game in which Town should have taken at least a point on the balance of play and chances created, but ultimately gave themselves too much to do by conceding some very cheap goals.
