Ipswich produced one of their best performances of the season, coming from behind to win 3-1 at Loftus Road. Paul Bloomfield reports.

More away day blues for Town in front of the Sky cameras appeared to be on the cards when Samuel Di Carmine gave QPR a third-minute lead. Wayne Routledge escaped Ben Thatcher down the right-hand side and put in a low ball to the near post for Di Carmine to fire past Richard Wright.

Town responded with an equalising goal in the 14th minute, when David Norris’ shot flicked off Pablo Counago and into the path of Jon Stead to knock past Lee Camp and into the net.

Counago spurned a great opportunity in the 22nd minute to put Town in front when he headed over from close range from Luciano Civelli’s corner. Having got his head to the ball, the striker will have been disappointed not to direct his header into the net.

10 minutes before half time, Town were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Gavin Mahon’s back header played in Pablo Counago. The Spaniard turned his back to goal and laid on Jon Stead for an effort on goal, but Stead failed to get his shot on target and fired wide of the post.

In the second half, the Blues took the lead just past the hour-mark in spectacular fashion through Pablo Counago. The Spaniard dispossessed Gavin Mahon before dribbling through the QPR defence and scoring with a superb left-footed finish from just inside the box.

Ipswich made it 3-1 on 70 minutes, when Alan Quinn picked out the run of Jon Walters with a sublime long ball and the Town substitute took the ball down superbly before expertly slotting past Lee Camp.

It was a fine team performance by Town, having made the worst possible start to the game. Two second half goals of the highest quality secured the win and ensured a second victory in a week for manager Jim Magilton, in a week where calls for him to go have been rife.
