| If Ipswich didn’t regard anything less than 3 points as points dropped before the game, they certainly will have done after the final whistle. Paul Bloomfield reports.Southampton took the lead after 12 minutes when Andrew Surman unleashed a low drive which found the corner of Richard Wright’s net. Ipswich got themselves back on level terms 8 minutes later through Owen Garvan. The Irish midfielder tucked the ball away after David Norris had seen his left-footed effort beaten out by former Town goalkeeper Kelvin Davis. Town very nearly went ahead just moments later, but Kelvin Davis kept out Jon Stead’s effort with a stunning save. Stead did find the net before half-time, but it was ruled out for offside. There was no question of offside when Alan Quinn put Town into the lead 5 minutes into the second-half, with a powerful header into the roof of the net from Moritz Volz’s right-wing cross. Town looked set to go on from there and add to their lead, and indeed had chances in abundance to do so but found themselves pegged back when Tomáš Pekhart blasted home from 10 yards in the 68th minute. The goal wasn’t without its controversy, as Town skipper Richard Naylor was down injured at the time of the equaliser. The Blues will have been very disappointed to not have come away with all three points, as they should have been out of sight before Pekhart bagged the Saints leveller, and indeed had further chances to win the game following the equalising goal.
