Ipswich suffered their first league defeat of 2009 at the hands of Roberto Martinez’s Swansea City. Paul Bloomfield reports.Swansea took the lead after just three minutes when Ipswich couldn’t handle Albert Serran’s burst forward down the right hand side, before he put in a low cross to the near post for Jason Scotland to steer home. Gareth McAuley will have been disappointed to have let Scotland escape him to give the Swans the lead. Tommy Miller came within a whisker of levelling for Town on ten minutes into the second half, with his low drive from just outside the box whistling just past the post. Jason Scotland all but sealed the points on 73 minutes with a fine individual effort. The Trinidad and Tobagan held off his pursuers with his back to goal before turning and firing past Richard Wright. Whilst it was a fine piece of play, it has to down as further poor defensive play from Town. Jon Stead pulled off a piece of skill himself and almost capped it with a goal having come on as a substitute. Stead performed a step-over from the touchline before unleashing a right-footed shot that Swansea goalkeeper Dorus De Vries kept out for the second time in a few seconds as Alan Quinn had seen his volleyed effort well saved in the build-up. Jordi Gomez put the icing on the cake for Swansea and completed Town’s misery with a stunning free-kick five minutes from the end. His left-footed strike from 35 yards left Richard Wright with no chance. As impressive as Swansea were, it was a poor display from Town and was particularly disappointing for the Ipswich fans who had made the journey to Wales.
