Oldham 1 Morecambe 1 (Morecambe win 5 – 4 on pens)

Oldham are knocked out of the Johnstone Paint Trophy at the first hurdle!

Oldham started the season with 4 wins, but within the space of a week they have followed this up by two defeats and a draw, concluded by League Two’s Morecambe who were victorious after a penalty shoot out in the first round tie at Boundary Park of the Johnstone Paint Trophy.

Last weeks defeat to Burnley in the Carling Cup was followed by the 2 – 2 draw away to Colchester and a 1 – 1 draw with Morecambe who then won the tie by 5 – 4 on penalties.

Underdogs Morecambe created and upset against John Sheridan’s high-flyers, Andy Parrish converting the winning spot-kick.

Oldham should arguably have the tie sewn up in the first half had it not been for Keeper Barry Roche who kept Morecambe in the game with first-half saves from Smalley, Alessandra and Whitaker. Lee Hughes also hit a post.

Oldham took the lead through Whitaker who scored with a low shot in the 56th minute.

On 65 minutes O'Carroll’s cross was volleyed in by Stewart Drummond to draw the sides level and leave the tie to be determined by penalties.

Game played: 2.9.08
