Oldham are knocked out of the Johnstone Paint Trophy at the first hurdle!Oldham started the season with 4 wins, but within the space of a week they have followed this up by two defeats and a draw, concluded by League Two’s Morecambe who were victorious after a penalty shoot out in the first round tie at Boundary Park of the Johnstone Paint Trophy. Last weeks defeat to Burnley in the Carling Cup was followed by the 2 – 2 draw away to Colchester and a 1 – 1 draw with Morecambe who then won the tie by 5 – 4 on penalties. Underdogs Morecambe created and upset against John Sheridan’s high-flyers, Andy Parrish converting the winning spot-kick. Oldham should arguably have the tie sewn up in the first half had it not been for Keeper Barry Roche who kept Morecambe in the game with first-half saves from Smalley, Alessandra and Whitaker. Lee Hughes also hit a post.
Oldham took the lead through Whitaker who scored with a low shot in the 56th minute.
