Paul Bloomfield takes a look at Ipswich’s new Dutch defender, Pim Balkestein.Pim Balkestein became Jim Magilton’s first signing of the summer after completing a move from Dutch side Heerenveen last month. So what do we know about him? Well, he is a tall 6ft 3in, left-footed, central defender with aerial prowess. The Dutchman demonstrated his aerial ability in a recent friendly at Brentford, scoring with a neat headed finish in a 2-0 win. Pim joins an ever-growing list of Dutchman to play for the club. He had been at Heerenveen since the age of thirteen, progressing through the youth ranks. He never made the breakthrough into the Heerenveen first team, but is thought to be a bright prospect. The centre-back spent time on trial at Ipswich during April and May and took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Tottenham. He obviously did enough to impress Town boss Jim Magilton who has swooped to sign the defender. The 21-year-old has joined Ipswich on a two-year contract, with the option of a third year, after an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £100,000 was agreed between the two clubs.
