James Couling reflects on Spain's pre tournamet friendly against PeruSpain provided a welcome encore to their own Saturday night fever On Saturday night (31st May 08) in Huelva, La Roja hinted at why they could again flatter to deceive at a major tournament. Despite enjoying the lion’s share of both possession and chances, the Spanish needed an injury time volley from left back Joan Capdevila to add a moral boosting victory to their 15 game unbeaten run. The hosts started as brightly as the lettering on their shirts, with David Silva and Xavi both testing Butron between Peru’s sticks, however it took David Villa’s cool finish from a scorching passing move in the 38th minute to get the crowd, and Iniesta, crudely fouled in the build up, back on their feet. La Selección changed personnel in the second half but this didn’t cramp their style, debutant Santi Cazorla setting up La Liga’s scoring sensation Dani Guiza who could only head down at Butron rather than into the back of the net. Spain failed to capitalise on their superiority, and a defensive mix up saw Hernan Rengifo loop a headed equaliser over the stranded Iker Casillas, who had came out to claim a ball that Marchena opted to hook away himself. This was exactly the kind of mistake that Spain will be looking to eradicate come June 10th when they take on Russia, though unfortunately for Peru it served like a red rag to a bull, and following further chances for Cazorla and Guiza, Capdevila emphatically met Cesc Fabregas’ cross for the winner.
