Mark Johnson discusses the new signings and The Claret’s prospects… 1-4. 0-3. 0-0. 0-0. Two consecutive league clean sheets has seen some confidence rise within the Burnley camp. Add to this two comfortable victories in the Carling Cup against lower league opposition, and the horizon looks bright. However, despite 2 clean sheets, and two points, The Clarets still sit next to bottom in The Championship. A suspension to Chris Eagles will do nothing to see this change, but another new signing is encouraging. With the defence being sured up over the previous two results, a new striker was certainly necessary. It has become ever evident that despite Martin Paterson’s relentless effort, and undoubtedly quality, proven by his goal-scoring record in the beginning of the season, he needs a target man to play with. Whilst many fans doubted whether Owen Coyle would invest in another striker with Paterson, Akinbiyi and Blake at his disposal, he has secured the services of Cardiff’s Steven Thompson. This is more than a positive signing for team, adding another dimension to the attacking play. In order to sure up the defence, Coyle deployed Graham Alexander in the holding role, directly between the back four and midfield. Whilst this did work to help the defence, it limited the attacking options, and left Paterson roaming the opposition half alone. With the new signing, however, Coyle can adapt a formation that allows both defensive solidity and attacking creativity. Ignoring the league position, The Clarets are looking promising. A Carling Cup tie against Premiership Fulham should see a large attendance at Turf Moor, and hopefully the Clarets can begin climbing up the league table. Fancy writing for LiveFootball?
